Mark Jason Milmine Southern California Military Academy, Signal Hill, CA. Class of 1988. Instrument: Trumpet, Student was introduced into the band in 3rd grade as a beginning bandsman. Was 3rd chair by 5th grade and excelled exponentially after that. He became a first chair trumpeter and started playing with the drum and bugle corp, then later that year as a solo trumpeter within the color guard ceremonies. He was personally chosen to play a solo taps memorial in 1985 and was decorated as one of the outstanding bandsman trophies. Later that same year was appointed as outstanding service for Drum and Bugle corp and following year became the drum and bugle corp commander then in 1986 became the band commander and lead trumpeter. During his graduation in 1988 he was awarded the John Philips Sousa Band Award for his dedication.

Sherry Jackson won the 1980 John Philip Sousa Band Award in Dalton Georgia as a section leader in the Dalton High School Catamount Band. She was also a member of the Georgia AllState Orchestra all 4 years in high school and a prolific pianist, both as a soloist and an accompanist. Sherry went on to study piano performance at the college level, where she played recitals each year, including an honors senior recital. Sherry accompanied instrumentalists, vocalists, and choirs extensively, as well as pipe organ at a large United Methodist church in Tallahassee, Florida.

Steve Mahoney South Gwinnett High School, Snellville, GA. Class of 1980. Instrument: Trombone, Director: Robert Andrews. Steve Mahoney was the epitome of this award as he was an outstanding Georgia All-State Band trombonist who was a class act, but more importantly, he was a gentleman and dear friend to those who knew him. Steve majored in trombone performance at the University of Georgia where he received his Bachelors and Masters degrees and was well on his way to becoming a trombonist in a major symphony before an untimely auto accident. Steve was loved and admired by all of his band colleagues in high school and at college. In the course of a lifetime a band director teaches those students who are successful in music and life, and Steve Mahoney was one of those rare individuals who touched the hearts of those he met and raised everyone's spirits. It was my honor and privilege to direct this fine young man in the South Gwinnett High School Band.
