I was playing the sousaphone for the concert. I was guest conductor for the elementary school band that played a couple of songs in the middle of the concert. I had been working with these students as an unofficial student teacher. When the high school band came back to play, I was introduced to play a soloist song called “Clarinet on the Town” and was brought up to the front of the band. I put my sousaphone down and picked up my clarinet and came to the front and played the solo song. At the end of the concert I was presented the Sousa award.
